The Faculty of Education
History
The Faculty of Education was established in 1953, but it was based on the teacher training department functioning within the Faculty of Humanities since the late 1920s. Originally its focus was
divided between pedagogy and psychology, until in 1979 a separate Institute of Psychology was created. The Faculty is now located in the building in Mokotowska 16/20. Historically, its activity focused on training school teachers, but over time it was developed to comprise other areas of education, such as organization and systems of education, adult education, special education, social work, etc. and to educate teachers at higher levels (graduate, post-graduate and doctoral studies) and through other means than just day studies (i.e. evening and extramural studies). The Faculty takes part in international exchange programmes for teachers and students, and in 2014 the all-English Graduate Programme in Teaching English to Young Learners was opened.
Goals
The Faculty’s research and educational work aims to educate and develop pedagogical personnel in various areas of social life, especially in the sphere of education, including teacher education, lifelong learning, socio-educational assistance to the child and family, and organizing socio-cultural activity. The Faculty works in cooperation with other scientific and educational centers in Poland and abroad. Depending on the specialization, the Faculty enables its students to gain knowledge and skills in the fields of supporting the individual and social development of children and adults, education of children at all stages of development, recognition and prevention of educational difficulties, educational and vocational counseling, planning educational work at local government institutions and non-governmental organizations, social work, building equity and participation in social and cultural life. The Faculty sensitizes students to the problems of violence and social exclusion, and promotes inclusive education and respecting the rights of people with disabilities.
