Prof. Barbara Woynarowska, MD, PhD, has passed away
With deep sorrow and sadness, we received the news that on March 20, 2026, Barbara Woynarowska passed away. She was a pediatrician and a specialist in school medicine.
An academic authority for many generations of physicians and educators, she was a long-time member of the Faculty of Education at the University of Warsaw. She served as the Head of the Department of Biomedical Foundations of Development and Education. She was the founder of the Health Promoting School movement in Poland and the first national coordinator of the international HBSC study (Health Behaviour in School-aged Children).
She was a member of the Committee of Public Health of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the creator of the concept of preventive healthcare for school-aged children. She co-authored the National Health Programme and published hundreds of works in the fields of school medicine, auxology, sports medicine, health education, and health promotion. She also authored academic textbooks in health education and biomedical foundations of development. She devoted particular attention to promoting knowledge about children’s and adolescents’ health among teachers and educators.

The funeral ceremony will take place on March 26, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. in the Old Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Warsaw, ul. Wólczyńska 64.
